LG G3 now comes with a free extra battery and charging cradle (US only)

LG G3 now comes with a free extra battery and charging cradle (US only)

Perhaps slightly worried about the upcoming launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4, and the imminent release of Apple’s 5.5-inch iPhone 6, LG today announced that it’s offering a free extra battery and a battery charging cradle to customers who buy its G3 smartphone from “major carriers’ stores and their authorized retailers, authorized national retailers and authorized online dealers.” As the title of this article mentions, the offer is available to US customers only.

The G3 normally comes with just one 3000 mAh battery - as you probably already know. The extra battery and charging cradle that LG is giving away are worth $70.

The new promotion ends on September 22, so you have plenty of time to decide if you want to buy the LG G3 (which costs $199 on contract, or about $600 off-contract), or wait for one of the newer high-end handsets that are about to be released. You can find everything you need to know about the LG G3 free battery promotion - including full terms and conditions - at the source link below. Also, if you haven't done it yet, you can read our LG G3 review here.

Lg G3 Stylus Handson

No comments:
A little over a week ago, LG made the G3 Stylus -- a mid-ranger with a... stylus -- official, but it wasn't until today that we managed to get our hands on the actual device at the company's IFA 2014 booth. This being a phablet styled after the mighty G3 and touting the one thing the company's flagship was missing (a pen), obviously made us curious.

Did we end up liking it? Read on to find out.

As you may have noticed, large Android manufacturers generally tend to stick to a specific design language that dictates the overall shape of the device and specifies ornamentation and what goes where. LG is no exception to this rule, and, by extensions -- nor is the G3 Stylus.

Indeed, the average user will have a rather hard time telling it apart from the G3, but two are not completely identical. Sure, the front looks essentially the same, with the bottom bezel housing the LG logo, but if you turn around device you'll start noticing some differences. For example, while the power key and volume rocker are located on the rear, they look different and the volume rocker doesn't sport the same tactile-friendly mesh texture. What's more, there's no opening for the laser focus beam and the G3 Stylus has just one LED flash.

The phone is also a bit on the chubby side, with thickness of 10.2 mm (0.4 in), but that's understandable given the generous, 3000 mAh cell. Unfortunately, while the finish of the rear reminds of that of the LG G3, the G3 Stylus feels decidedly less high-end, and you're very aware that you're handling plastic.

Overall, however, the near-identical looks of the G3 Stylus with the company's flagship is a good thing, as we quite like the G3. It's also nice to see that the mid-ranger is pleasantly curved at the sides on the back, so ergonomics are as decent as on could expect with a phablet.

Display

So far, we've mostly talked about how the G3 Stylus is alike to the G3, but when talking about the display, things are much different. Sure, it's also got an identical-sized, 5.5-inch IPS LCD display, but that one has a lowly qHD resolution, or 540 x 960 pixels. That works out to just barely 200 pixels per inch, and while that sounds underwhelming, the screen was looking alright. Obviously, while we don't expect miracles from mid-range devices like the G3 Stylus, LG could have nevertheless bumped up the resolution a little bit.

As for the stylus, it is pretty ordinary-looking -- a typical capacitive type. The writing experience on the display is mostly pretty decent, though there is some lag. That said, we can't say it performed worse than, say, the Note 3's own S-Pen.

Interface

The LG G3 Stylus has Android 4.4 KitKat on board -- the latest major update currently available. We're unaware of LG's plans concerning future software updates (Android L, anyone?), but we're pretty happy with what we've got here.

You heard that right -- while LG's UI used to be only 'okay' in terms of looks, we find ourselves liking the latest visual update of the custom overlay. It's flatter than before, and more light-weight looking, all the while retaining the same wide portfolio of extra features. If anyone could light a candle to Samsung's TouchWiz software in terms of feature set, it's LG.

So, if you're familiar with LG's current overlay, you'll expect goodies like Dual Window (run two apps side by side), KnockCode (set a lock pattern with knocks) and KnockOn (double tap the screen to wake) to be on board, and they are.

Processor and memory

Nothing fancy lies underneath the exterior of the G3 Stylus -- at least in terms of processing power. It's got a 1.3GHz, quad-core processor that LG hasn't specified, though we suspect we're talking about Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 with an Adreno 305 GPU. Considering the phone also has 1GB of RAM on board and a lowly qHD resolution, we don't imagine you'll run into trouble running even more demanding apps. And indeed, in our time with the G3 Stylus, we had a frills-free experience.

As for internal storage, there are 8GB on board. Thankfully, there's a slot for a microSD card, so you can expand.

Camera

Embedded at the back of the G3 Stylus is a promising, 13-megapixel camera with autofocus and a single LED flash. Obviously, don't expect this to churn out photos on par with the 13-megapixel snapper on the G3, but it's certainly adequate considering the class of the phone.

At the front, LG has fitted a 1.3-megapixel snapper that should get you by whenever you need it for a video call or, of course, a selfie.

Expectations

From what we know so far, LG is aiming to release the G3 Stylus in 3G markets like Bazril and Russia, but also other regions, including the Middle East and Africa, and parts of Asia. Unfortunately, we're still unaware of the way LG wants to price these, and that obviously precludes us from having an educated opinion about the handset. And price, more than anything else, is what will decide the fate of the LG G3 Stylus.

LG Gx2 is G Vista for Asia, a 5.7" phablet with LTE-A, laser focus

No comments:
The US-bound LG G Vista is going to Asia as the LG Gx2. It's a 5.7" phablet that replaces last year's LG Gx but with less impressive specs. The screen is an IPS LCD with 720p resolution and the processor is a 1.2GHz quad-core (most likely a Cortex-A7) with 1.5GB RAM.
The phablet runs Android KitKat with LG's latest UX, Knock Codes and support for LG Quick Circle Cases. There's LTE-A connectivity and a 3,200mAh battery to power it all.

The camera on the LG Gx2 is an 8MP shooter with Laser focus, which uses IR light to achieve accurate focus quickly even in poor lighting conditions. There's also a 1.3MP front-facing camera.
The Gx2 measures 152.1 x 79.2 x 9.1mm and weighs 165g and comes in either White or Black. The phablet will launch on September 18 but pricing info will be revealed later on. This model will likely stay in Asia, there's no word on an international version.

LG teases G Watch R in an image on Facebook

No comments:
We have gotten a sneak peek at LG's upcoming Android Wear smartwatch, apparently known as the G Watch R. The video LG released earlier didn't really show much, other than brag about the fact that it will have a full circle display (unlike the semi-circular display of the Moto 360).

LG has now posted an image of the watch on its Facebook page, which gives a slightly better look at the watch. It is about as traditional looking as it can get and with the default watch face looks pretty much like any other watch.
The display does look like it will be slightly smaller than the one on the Moto 360 and has thicker bezels around the side. Motorola managed to have a bigger screen and smaller bezels by shoving in all the display drivers, which would normally be around the side below the display in the black portion.
We'll get a better look at the G Watch R next week at IFA 2014 where it will be officially unveiled.

LG G3 will be the company's first smartphone to reach 10 million units sold

LG G3 will be the company's first smartphone to reach 10 million units sold
LG released its G3 flagship smartphone in late May, first in South Korea, and then gradually in other markets. The handset is now available almost everywhere around the world, and is on track to breaking the 10 million units sold mark.

According to The Korea Times, LG confirmed in a recent statement that the G3 “will exceed the 10 million sales mark” - becoming the company’s first smartphone to do so. While LG didn’t say when it expects the 10 million milestone to be reached, this will probably happen pretty soon.

The G3 helped LG ship a record 14.5 million smartphones in the second quarter of the year, and the company already unveiled two cheaper variants of it: the G3 s / Beat, and the G3 Stylus.

Introduced as the first Quad HD (1440 x 2560 pixels) smartphone made by a major manufacturer, the LG G3 is a high-end device that offers plenty of attractive features, including a 13 MP rear camera with laser auto focus, a front-facing camera that lets you take selfies using gestures, a 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, and 3 GB of RAM. To find out more about the smartphone, you should read our LG G3 review.

LG G3 Stylus is now official: qHD display, quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 3G connectivity

LG G3 Stylus is now official: qHD display, quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 3G connectivity
Earlier this month, we told you that LG was coming out with a lower priced version of its LG G3 flagship model, called the LG G3 Stylus. LG played hide and seek with this phone on a promotional video, and finally made it official on Tuesday morning in Korea. The screen size remains the same as on the LG G3, but with the Stylus, the resolution is 540 x 960 as opposed to the 1440 x 2560 on the flagship model. If you want to look at it another way, the flagship version of the LG G3 has a qHD screen. Who would have thought that a lower case "q" would make such a big difference.

A quad-core 1.3GHz GPU powers the Stylus, which includes 1GB of RAM and 8GB of native storage. A microSD slot allows you to add memory, and the back and front cameras weigh in at 13MP and 1.3MP respectively. Keeping the phone powered up is a 3000mAh battery. A stylus comes with the handset (hence its name), and Android 4.4.2 is pre-installed, out of the box. The LG G3 Stylus will have 3G connectivity and will be available in black, white and gold.

The features on the phone include Dual Window, which allows you to open up two apps at the same time. Smart Keyboard learns the way you type, and reduces errors by as much as 75%. The two steps you normally use to take a picture, are reduced to one with Touch and Shoot. Tap the device to focus, and to activate the shutter, in just one move. KnockCode allows you to come up with a pattern of up to eight taps to unlock the handset. And lastly, with Gesture Shot you open and close your hand in front of the lens to start a three-second countdown, that will result in a picture being captured.

The LG G3 Stylus will launch next month in 3G markets in Brazil. Other locations to follow include Asia, Middle East and Africa, and CIS. Pricing and availability will be announced with each local launch.

Android fragmentation report shows Samsung is still top dog

No comments:
The guys at OpenSignal thrive on smartphone statistics and once agin they took the time to plot Android fragmentation. It was a mammoth undertaking as the dominant smartphone platform has splintered in many different ways.
First off is that Android devices are made by a myriad of manufacturers. Samsung was by far the biggest with 43% market share and 12 of the 13 most popular devices. Despite the domination, the company's market share has actually slipped, last year it had 47.5% of the market.
