Gionee breaks its own record with the 0.2-inch (5.15mm) thin Elife S5.1 smartphone, tons of pictures included
Chinese vendor Gionee has pulled the curtains on its newest Android handset, the Gionee Elife S5.1. Its predecessor, the Elife S5.5, was released not long ago, and quickly became notable for its body thickness, an ultra-thin 0.22 inches (5.5mm). Now, Gionee has outdone itself yet again, producing a smartphone whose sides measure a groundbreaking 0.2-inches thin (5.15mm)!

This thinner than a pencil Slim Jim's exact dimensions are 5.5 inches x 2.65 inches x 0.2 inches (139.8mm×67.4mm×5.15mm). The phone's sides carry the maximum thinness, while the upper and lower sides are slightly wider - possibly in order to accommodate the micro-USB port and headphone jack.

Aside from being fashionably skinny, the Gionee Elife S5.1 is a compact and beautiful phone with more refined looks compared to its predecessor. Alas, the trade-off is that Gionee has opted for mid-range internals for one reason or another - possibly to not strain the 2100mAh battery it somehow managed to fit in its chassis.

The AMOLED display has been shrunk down from 5.0 inches to 4.8 inches by diagonal, and the resolution reduced from 1080p to 720p, resulting in a pixel density of 306ppi. The rear camera has an 8MP sensor, while the front cam has a cool 5MP sensor. The processor is Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 400 clocked to 1.2GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM, while the storage capacity is 16GB with no microSD expansion options. Finally, the operating system is Android 4.3 with Gionee's own Amigo 2.0 interface laid on top.

The Gionee Elife S5.1 will start selling this month in China, but the price hasn't been revealed. Until the launch, feel free to gaze at the huge collection of photos and renderings we have assembled for your viewing pleasure!

Microsoft eliminates all but one chassis vendor for the Surface tablet line

No comments:

Microsoft eliminates all but one chassis vendor for the Surface tablet line
With buyers of the Microsoft Surface Tablet line not exactly knocking each other down in a race to the cash register, Microsoft has reduced the number of chassis suppliers for the tablet range to one. According to sources from the upstream supply chain, Microsoft stopped ordering the part from its Chinese-based suppliers last month. Instead, the manufacturer has started outsourcing all of its chassis orders to Ju Teng, a manufacturer located in Hong Kong.

Since the Surface is not a hot seller at the moment, Microsoft won't be able to save any money by spreading out orders for the chassis to multiple suppliers, and trying to negotiate a more favorable price amongst them. Sources say that Microsoft might try to reduce the number of suppliers for other Surface components to one.

Back in June, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 was launched. The slate is being marketed as a replacement for the laptop, able to handle any work related tasks, while also allowing users to play games, browse the internet and check their social networks. That makes the slab perfect for business executives and students alike. Just last week, Microsoft expanded the distribution of the Surface Pro 3 to 25 new markets.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 leaks: alleged IFA poster shows up

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 leaks: alleged IFA poster shows up
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is probably the most anticipated new device out there, and with the official unveiling coming in just a few days on September 3rd at the IFA show, it’s about time we heard more about it. Samsung has put a tight veil of secrecy over its fourth-generation phablet, and apart from a few stray (and not all that credible) leaked images, we know little about the looks of the upcoming Note 4.

Now, however, pictures of an alleged Galaxy Note 4 poster at the IFA show in Berlin reveal the looks of the phablet. The image is a blurry one and does not give a whole lot of new information, but it does show that Samsung has done an admirable job minimizing bezel and turning the otherwise Note 4 into a gadget that is compact for its size.

The other detail that one can see is the higher, QHD (or Quad HD, standing for 1440 x 2560 pixels) resolution of the Note 4.

Alongside this latest leak, Samsung has also earlier published a User Agent Profile (UA Prof) file for the Note 4. UA Prof files are specification files that describe the model, screen size and other features of the device before it gets public. Making such a file is not obligatory, but usually when done it is done by the phone maker itself (in this case from Samsung), and is a nigh-official confirmation of a device. The UA Prof file of the Note 4 also lists it as having a Quad HD resolution.

Gold-plated iPhone 6 Elite versions already up on preorder for a hefty price
Luxury phone studio Goldgenie has outed its first batch of iPhone 6 tuning solutions, depicting in full detail what the phone could end up looking like. Goldgenie will offer Apple's 4.7" handset under the iPhone 6 Elite title in gold, platinum, and the funky rose gold for hefty prices, which depend on which precious metal execution you pick. There is even a limited Gulf Collection, with laser-engraved emblems of the seven Gulf States, for, you know, those most likely to buy such phones.

The company claims that it will have handsets set apart for its gold-plating craft immediately after release, "expected within a few weeks." Also, "having built a wide international following amongst discerning luxury connoisseurs and celebrities for their pioneering craftsmanship Goldgenie understand from experience that when the latest iPhone launches, demand for their luxury customised range of iPhones outstrips supply.... the phone is currently being offered at the iPhone 5s price and includes a LIFETIME WARRANTY on both customisation and the device, ensuring complete peace of mind. Prices start at £2,197.50 for clients who place a 50% deposit prior to launch for those who place pre-orders with a 50% deposit before Apple's launch..." Any takers?

9 ex-flagships that you can now buy as great mid-range smartphones

9 ex-flagships that you can now buy as great mid-range smartphones
Have you noticed that it’s easier to find a perfect mid-range smartphone than a high-end one? That’s because, alongside all the new mid-range devices, you also have the option of buying a former flagship that’s old enough to be downgraded to the mid-range category. There are plenty of ex-flagships that can still provide a great user experience - assuming that you don’t necessarily need the very latest CPUs, or crazy screen resolutions that were unimaginable some years ago.

Of course, in addition to having more options to choose from, getting a mid-range smartphone also saves you money (though, as you’ll see, that’s not always the case). This being said, check out our selection of ex-flagships that can now be purchased as mid-range handsets, and let us know if there's any other device that we should've included in the list - which, by the way, is in alphabetical order.

Apple iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S 8GB is Apple’s only smartphone that’s available for less than $500 off-contract. That, however, doesn’t mean it’s cheap: at $450, it’s still pretty expensive for what it’s offering - including a 3.5-inch display with 640 x 960 pixels. But, hey, that’s how Apple rolls.

 BlackBerry Q10

If you’re a fan of old-school BlackBerries - with their great hardware QWERTY keyboards - the Q10 should be the first on your list of mid-range phones to consider buying. Released in the first half of 2013 for a hefty price, the Q10 can now be purchased for less than $300, either directly from BlackBerry, or from Amazon. Alongside a large QWERTY keyboard, the BlackBerry Q10 offers a 3.1-inch Super AMOLED display with 720 x 720 pixels, an 8 MP rear camera, dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of expandable internal memory. The Q10 runs BlackBerry 10 OS.

2.

Google Nexus 4

Manufactured by LG, Google’s flagship smartphone form late 2012 may have its shortcomings (like the mediocre 8 MP camera and the somewhat fragile glass-based construction), but it’s undeniably a very good smartphone for its price - you can buy the 16 GB version, unlocked, for around $280 via Amazon.

2.

LG Optimus G Pro

Introduced in February last year, the Optimus G Pro was seen by many as being too big - and that’s because the handset sports a 5.5-inch 1080p display. Since then, however, extra-large displays have become more popular. If you don’t mind the fact that the Optimus G Pro is powered by the not-so-high-end Snapdragon 600 processor, you can buy the handset right now for around $300.

Motorola Droid Maxx

The Motorola Droid line has been very successful at Verizon Wireless, and the Droid Maxx is one of the best smartphones in the series. The Droid Maxx is similar to the Droid Ultra, but adds a very large 3500 mAh battery, this being a bit thicker. You can get the Droid Maxx fro Verizon for $49.99 on contract, or $499.99 without any agreement.

Nokia Lumia 1020

It’s hard, if not impossible, to find a smartphone that can take better photos than the Nokia Lumia 1020. That’s because this Windows Phone handset (released about a year ago, and recently updated to Windows Phone 8.1) features a 41 MP camera with PureView technology, thus being able to capture incredibly detailed photos, and even videos. The problem - if we may put it this way - with the Lumia 1020 is that it still carries a premium price tag: Microsoft is selling the handset for $549.99.

2.

Samsung Galaxy S III

Yes, the Galaxy S III is still around, and it’s currently available for less than $300 unlocked. The S III was Samsung’s best selling smartphone in 2012, and won’t disappoint you if you think a 4.8-inch 720p display is enough for your mobile needs.

2.

Samsung Galaxy Note II

The Galaxy Note II was Samsung’s other flagship of 2012, being released in the second half of that year. The Note II built on the success of the very first Galaxy Note, offering more advanced features, an improved 5.5-inch display, and an enhanced S Pen experience. The Note II currently costs a tad under $400.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Some say that the water-resistant Xperia Z Ultra is a phablet, though Sony announced it as an extra-large smartphone. The handset sports a 6.4-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixels, and is only 6.4mm-thin. Unlocked, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra currently costs around $400.

User Agent Profile confirms 1440 x 2560 QHD resolution for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 screenUser Agent Profile confirms 1440 x 2560 QHD resolution for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 screen
A User Agent Profile found on the Samsung Mobile site, confirms the 1440 x 2560 resolution screen on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The eagerly awaited phablet is expected to be introduced on Wednesday during a Samsung UNPACKED event. The UAProf shows that the latest iteration of Sammy's phablet line will have a model number of SM-N920T.

We expect the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to offer a 5.7 inch screen, powered by the Snapdragon 805 CPU in certain regions, and an octa-core Exynos processor in other regions. 3GB of RAM is said to be inside and the phablet has been tipped to arrive with the same fingerprint sensor that is employed on the Samsung Galaxy S5. The Samsung S Pen will come with the phone (either that, or Samsung has wasted a ton of money and time on video teasers).

We will be providing extensive coverage of Samsung's event, along with events planned by the other manufacturers at IFA. And don't forget Apple's September 9th festivities. Keep your browser right here!

Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk renders appear, as clear as the Hudson River

Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk renders appear, as clear as the Hudson River
Sony is expected to introduce the Sony Xperia Z3, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact this coming week at IFA in Berlin. In addition, it appears that Sony will be introducing a pair of new wearable devices at the same time. Fuzzy looking renders of both the Sony SmartWatch 3 and the Sony SmartBand Talk have appeared, sparking talk that both will also be unveiled at the Sony event on September 4th.

The Sony SmartWatch 3 is powered by Android Wear and will feature a 1.68 inch screen with a 320 x 320 resolution. The timepiece has an IP58 certification, which means that it will withstand a submersion in up to 5 feet of water, for as long as 30 minutes.

The Sony SmartBand Talk is the follow up to the Sony SmartBand line, used by health conscious fitness buffs, to monitor all of their movements over the course of a day. With a curved e-ink display, the SmartBand Talk features Bluetooth connectivity. Use of the word "Talk" at the end of the product's name reveals that this wearable might have some phone capabilities, or perhaps it will notify you about calls to a paired smartphone.

It is a big week coming up with product introductions expected from a number of manufacturers. The excitement is building, and Sony's presentation will be taking place on Thursday.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumor round-up: specs, features, price, release date, and all we know so far

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumor round-up: specs, features, price, release date, and all we know so far
Image above is of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3

It has been about two and a half years since the very first Samsung Galaxy Note came out and single-handedly defined the phablet category. Since then, we've witnessed the launch of two highly-acclaimed successors, the Galaxy Note II and the Galaxy Note 3, and the attempts on Samsung competitors' side to deliver a worthy alternative appear to have had little impact on the momentum that Galaxy Note handsets have built up. In fact, we're only weeks away from greeting the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which is shaping up as a beast of a smartphone. How do we know? Well, Samsung's J.K. Shin already hinted that a new Galaxy Note phone is in the works. He did not elaborate on the matter, of course, but hey, that's what we have the rumor mill for! So here's what is known about the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 so far, based on all the recent leaks and rumors.

Design

A photo of what's probably the Galaxy Note 4 in a protective case
A photo of what's probably the Galaxy Note 4 in a protective case
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (rumored model SM-N910) will be a relatively large smartphone, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. What exactly it is going to look like, however, is not exactly clear at this point in time, although we have a handful of hints in the form of leaked images. Furthermore, we can safely assume that size-wise, it will come really close to the current Galaxy Note 3 model since the screen size is expected to stay at 5.7 inches. As far as build quality goes, we are expecting the Galaxy Note 4 to be a plastic-made phone with metal-made elements. Chances are it will not have a perforated design à la Samsung Galaxy S5. Also, rumors hint that Electric Blue and Copper Gold versions of the phablet are incoming.

UPDATE: Rumors seem to confirm that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will use metal elements in its outer construction. This bit of information was recently provided by Korean media. It is also believed that the phablet could be made thinner thanks to a new technology replacing the touchscreen digitizer with ultrasound sensors. The latter, however, seems rather unlikely to happen.

UPDATE #2: We now have leaked images that increase the chance of seeing a metal-made Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The phone won't be all metal, however. Only the sides will be made of the premium material, as is the case with the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha. Take a look at the leaked photos for a clearer idea as to what the Note 4 might look like.

Resistance to the elements is said to be in the cards for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. To be more specific, the smartphone is expected to be protected against dust and water damage. This one should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as it comes from a source that claimed the same for the LG G3. Yet on the other hand, since the Galaxy S5 has an IP67 rating, it won't be surprising to see a liquid-resistant Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

A fingerprint sensor is likely to come embedded in the Note 4's home button

Several new sensors are expected to make an appearance on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Rumor has it that the phone will sport a fingerprint scanner, presumably embedded in the home key, and a heart-rate monitor, just like the Galaxy S5. The use for these should be self-explanatory. In addition, Samsung might add a sensor detecting ultra-violet radiation. This could allow for better automatic brightness adjustments and could help to warn you if you are at risk for a sun burn when you're outside.

Of course, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will come with an S Pen resting in its dedicated slot. It is believed that the S Pen will come in an improved form, but what kind of improvements these might be is not yet known.

Display

A Samsung patent visualizing a 'wraparound' curved display
A Samsung patent visualizing a 'wraparound' curved display
One of the more peculiar rumors out there states that we should be expecting multiple Samsung Galaxy Note 4 variants – one with a typical, flat display, and another with a curved display. Actually, this one is not too hard to believe given that last year's Samsung Galaxy Round was basically a Galaxy Note 3 with a curved AMOLED touchscreen and without an S Pen. What's worth pointing out, however, is that the "curved" Galaxy Note 4 may have a Samsung-made YOUM screen that would extend around the edges in a "wraparound" fashion. The practical benefits of this design feature are anyone's guess at this time. If this curved Note 4 variant does turn out to be real, it will probably be available solely in niche markets.

Either way, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is rumored to sport a 5.7-inch display, just like the Galaxy Note 3. The resolution, however, will get a bump to 1440 by 2560 pixels (QHD) for a pixel density rivaling that of the LG G3's awesome screen. True to Samsung's traditions, the Note 4's display will most likely be of the Super AMOLED kind. Rumors are mum on whether the flat and curved Galaxy Note 3 variants will both have the same display specifications, or factors like size and resolution will differ.

UPDATE: A list of APK files obtained by @evleaks seemingly confirms the QHD resolution of the Note 4's display.

Interface and functionality

Whatever version of Android ends up running on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, it will most likely come in a heavily modified form. Samsung's TouchWiz interface in its latest variation – the one that we know from the Galaxy S5 – should be on board the device, along with goodies like Multi Window and whatever S Pen optimized features Samsung comes up with.

Furthermore, it is rumored that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will get swipe gestures of some kind. These could be used for waking up the device and possibly for launching the camera from stand-by. Another feature that Samsung is allegedly testing could be Smart Fingerprint. Basically, it could be a shortcut for accessing certain functions with a swipe on the fingerprint scanner. Features found on the Galaxy S5 are also coming to the Note 4, it seems. Download Booster is expected to be one of them, allowing users to download large files using the combined bandwidth of a Wi-Fi and an LTE network.

Naturally, modes and features that appeared on the Galaxy S5 should be pre-loaded on the Samsung galaxy Note 4, including the Ultra Power Saving mode. And if the phone does get a heart-rate monitor, then it will most likely ship with the newest release of S Health for all your fitness monitoring needs.

Processor and memory

As the case is with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will be available in two different processor flavors. According to rumors, that is. North America, South Korea, China, and Japan are expected to get a variant powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 SoC, while the rest of the world should be using Samsung's own Exynos chip, presumably the Exynos 5433. Both are probably going to pack at least 3GB of RAM, as that is what the Note 3 is rocking under the hood. No hints of storage space have been passed along so far, but we're inclined to believe that at least 32 gigs will be on board, with the option to add a microSD card for extra storage.

UPDATE: Model names for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 have been leaked. It appears that all major US carriers will be offering the device with 32GB of native storage. Also, the white variant might be a Verizon exclusive, at least at launch. Here's what we know so far:

  • Samsung SM-N910A - 32GB, AT&T, Black
  • Samsung SM-N910V - 32GB, Verizon, Black/White
  • Samsung SM-N910P - 32GB, Sprint, Black
  • Samsung SM-N910T - 32GB, Black

UPDATE #2: Benchmark results for two versions of the Note 4 seem to confirm that there will be Snapdragon 805 and Exynos 5433 variants of the phone. As expected, both offer an outstanding display resolution of 1440 by 2560 pixels, 16MP main cameras, ~3.7MP front cameras, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Listings on a retailer's web site suggest that 16- and 64-gigabyte versions could also be available.

Camera

The Note 4 is expected to have a 16MP camera
The Note 4 is expected to have a 16MP camera
According to what's making the rounds, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will be packing a 16-megapixel camera, just like the Samsung Galaxy S5. But unlike the latter, the Note 4 will be utilizing optical image stabilization for steadier videos and blur-free photos. Sony is said to be the supplier for the camera unit, which, if true, could mean that the Note 4 won't be boasting phase-detection auto-focus. Note that the the Samsung Galaxy S5, which owes its super-fast focusing abilities to the said technology, uses an ISOCELL sensor by Samsung, and special pixel pairs on the sensor's surface are what make phase-detection AF work. As for the handset's front-facing camera, we're not expecting any surprises. It is said that Samsung will stick with the S5's 2MP front-facing camera for the Galaxy Note 4.

UPDATE: According to Korean media, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 might come with a 12MP camera instead of a 16MP one. Sounds strange given the fact that the Note 3 uses a 13MP one, but we wouldn't label this rumor as bogus right away. The choice to go with a lower-resolution sensor might have been made to allow for optical image stabilization gear to be implemented. Interestingly, benchmark results seem to detect a 3.7MP front-facing camera on the device.

UPDATE #2: Rumors in favor of a 16MP camera are starting to pile up. Whatever the actual pixel count of the phone's snapper, rumors agree that it will be blessed with optical image stabilization.

Price and release date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be announced on September 3 – days before the start of the IFA in Berlin. This rumor is most likely on the right track as the Note 3 and the Note II were introduced around the same time and showcased during the same expo. Details on the phone's availability are expected to be made official at its announcement, but our guess is that the phone will launch within weeks after it is made official. As for its pricing, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is not going to be cheap, if our intuition is to be trusted. Last year's Note 3 was offered for $299 on a 2-year contract with a major US carrier, and the Note 4 is probably going to be about as costly. But if the phone is indeed bundled with a Samsung Gear 3 smartwatch, then the offer might sound quite tempting.

UPDATE: It is rumored that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is ready to go into mass production. Allegedly, Samsung is aiming to launch the device only days after its official announcement – during the second week of September. The phone is most likely going to be announced on September 3 as official invitations to a Samsung Unpacked event have already been sent to the media.
