Galaxy Note 4 S Health can sense and track even more stuff

No comments:
Galaxy Note 4 sensors

Your Note 4 can record your blood oxygen saturation and sunlight UV levels, in addition to other metrics

IFA 2014 In the Galaxy S4, Samsung introduced a built-in pedometer and the S Health app. Earlier this year it followed up with a built-in heart rate sensor in the Galaxy S5. And now in the new Galaxy Note 4, the Korean manufacturer brings a couple more sensor capabilities into the mix. Read on for a quick look at S Health's new tricks.
Galaxy Note 4 S Health
The latest version of S Health on the Galaxy Note 4 comes with all the capabilities and features owners of the Galaxy S5 will be familiar with — an exercise tracker with built-in pedometer, and the ability to keep tabs on food, weight, sleep patterns (with a supported accessory), and your heart rate using the built-in sensor. On top of that, the phone can now sense your blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and the strength of ultraviolet light from the sun.
Both of these are measured using the Note 4's sensor module, which is once again situated below its rear camera. And it's grown a bit since we first saw it on the Galaxy S5.
Galaxy Note 4 sensors
Reading your SpO2 level works the same as reading your heart rate — in fact, when you take a reading the former, the Note 4 will also report the latter. As we've seen on other Samsung phones like the Galaxy S5 Mini, taking readings using the rear-mounted sensors can be hit and miss, and on a couple of occasions the Note 4 demo units at IFA failed to take an SpO2 reading even when our finger was right over the sensor. That said, we're still dealing with preproduction hardware and software in a noisy trade show environment.
According to Wikipedia, your SpO2 level should generally be above 94 percent. Any lower than 85 percent and you'll have bigger problems than properly aligning your finger with a bunch of sensors on your smartphone.
UV levelUV dialog
Recording UV levels uses the same sensor. The Galaxy Note 4 asks you to point the back of the phone up towards the sun for a few seconds, then gives you a reading from low to high. We couldn't test this feature outside, but after a few seconds the Note 4 reassuringly told us that the UV levels under the artificial show floor lighting were indeed "low."
As with other health metrics, S Health keeps track historic readings of both SpO2 and UV levels.
S Health on Galaxy Note 4
The S Health app itself has also undergone a minor redesign, with a refreshed overview page displaying your latest stats — SpO2, steps, caloric intake, heart rate, stress and more.
So if you're into tracking all your vitals on your smartphone, the Galaxy Note 4 offers even more stuff to keep track of. How much of this will be of any value to the average user, however, remains to be seen.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs Nokia Lumia 1520: first look

No comments:

Peering into the phablet market, there’s a one constant that seems to take precedence each and every time. It should be no surprise to anyone that Samsung’s Galaxy Note line continues to be the class-leader in the space – and it looks to stay like that with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. In the Android space, it’s clearly the phone to beat, but it still has competition from the Windows Phone side. To be more exact, not only is the Nokia Lumia 1520 deemed as a phablet worthy enough to give any Android smartphone a good run for its money, but it’s arguably the best phone representing Microsoft’s platform.

Design

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs Nokia Lumia 1520: first look
Even though Samsung is able to sprinkle a subtle premium element to the Note 4’s design, our eyes can’t get away from the Lumia 1520’s stylish design – more so when it’s available in a palette of colors. Sure, they’re both constructed primarily out of plastic, but Nokia Lumia 1520’s plastic build has a more solid feel to it. Throw in the Lumia 1520’s tapered edges, there’s no arguing that there’s a higher degree of style to Nokia’s offering. In contrast, though, the Galaxy Note 4 opts to favor a more sophisticated look.

Certainly, there’s little hiding the fact that these two are regarded as phablets, due to their immense sizes of course. However, our hands are better able to cope with the slimmer confines of the Galaxy Note 4 – thanks in part to Samsung’s engineering in shaving off more of the bezel surrounding the display. Handling both phones require two hands for a more comfortable feel, but we’re still better able to handle the Note 4 more than the Lumia 1520. Nokia’s offering is seriously a beast of a phone – both in size and weight.

Display

Without going into the details regarding the specs of their displays, our own two eyes are able to tell us which of the two displays is the superior one. Frankly, it’s one-sided victory for the Galaxy Note 4’s 5.7-inch 1440 x 2560 Super AMOLED display, seeing that it produces the sharper looking details. Looking back, the Lumia 1520 is notable for being the first Windows Phone to feature a 1080p resolution display, which is paired with a 6-inch screen. From a normal viewing distance, it’s still effective enough to match the sharpness and clarity of its rival’s display, but upon closer inspection, there’s no denying the crisper looks of the Note 4’s display. Furthermore, we can attest from the short time handling the Note 4, that its display is noticeably brighter – giving it more visibility under various lighting conditions.

In the end, considering that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the newer device, it benefits from having the more prized and attractive display. In fact, it’s looking like it’s going to beat the Lumia 1520’s display in nearly every category.

Interface and Functionality

Sporting the latest Samsung TouchWiz experience, we’ll gladly be honest and mention that the customized Android experience of the Note 4 is still a step up from the Windows Phone 8.1 experience of the Lumia 1520. Microsoft has made considerable strides with its latest software experience, but at the end of the day, when it comes to getting stuff done, the Note 4 is equipped with a ton of software features that make it conducive to the needs of productivity conscious users. Heck, the Note 4’s multi-window mode is enough to blast the multi-tasking execution of the Lumia 1520’s offering.

Visually, though, we’re more favorable to the Windows Phone 8.1 experience of the Lumia 1520 – primarily for its modern looks and dynamic feel. In comparison, TouchWiz continues to look very much cartoony, so it’s long overdue for a major redesign to match the contemporary looks of Windows Phone 8.1.

Processor and Memory

Outfitted with Qualcomm’s newest chipset, a Snapdragon 805 SoC coupled with 2GB of RAM, we notice that the Note 4 exhibits a slightly more fluid response – albeit, the Lumia 1520’s Snapdragon 800 is still powerful enough to handle similar tasks. Despite packing hardware deemed as last-gen, the Lumia 1520 is still a highly effective phone for gaming. On the flip side, we surely know that the Note 4 is more than equipped to handle the most demanding things. Games included!

We really can’t complain about their storage capacities, as they both offer a spacious 32GB, which can be supplemented by their microSD card slots. However, since the Lumia 1520’s slot requires a special tool to access, we find the Note 4’s slot to be more accessible.

Camera

Shutterbugs might want to listen up, that’s because these are two formidable photo-taking devices. Don’t count out the almost year-old Lumia 1520, as it continues to be a trailblazer with the impressive quality put out by its 20-megapixel PureView camera, which is arguably one of the best in the category. Well, the Note 4 packs some heat of its own in the form of its updated 16-megapixel camera, one that is now greeted with optical image stabilization – a feature that’s also available on the Lumia 1520. In the past, we’ve been astounded by the sheer amount of details captured by the Lumia 1520’s camera, but it’ll be interesting to see how the Note 4 is able to compare.

Expectations

Competition is in abundance everywhere we look, so it’s no surprise that these two prized smartphones are on a crash course collision towards one another. Thanks to availability of Windows Phone 8.1, the Nokia Lumia 1520 can now match the Android’s diversified portfolio of software features – albeit, the Note 4 receives some additional enhancements to give it yet more functionality than its rival. At the same time, the Galaxy Note 4 as a whole has all of the bells and whistles to make it every bit of a flagship device. There’s no arguing the popularity surrounding Sammy’s Note line, but we can’t neglect the Nokia Lumia 1520’s impressive tally as well.

Alcatel OneTouch Flash announced as a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo competitor

No comments:

Alcatel OneTouch Flash announced as a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo competitor
The newest Alcatel-branded smartphone is the OneTouch Flash (model number 6042D), a handset that’s been officially introduced in Thailand - where it’s going to be promoted as a Samsung Galaxy Note competitor.

Alcatel’s promo video for the OneTouch Flash shows the handset personified as an Android robot that fights an evil-looking “Note.” Obviously, the Flash wins in the end, helped by some of its allegedly superior features. Alcatel is pitting its new device against the Note 3 Neo, not against the high-end Note 3: as you’ll see in the video, OneTouch Flash’s opponent has a 3100 mAh battery, just like the Note 3 Neo (and unlike the Note 3, which comes with a 3200 mAh battery).
Regardless of what handsets it’s going to compete with, the Alcatel OneTouch Flash runs Android 4.4 KitKat, and features a 5.5-inch IPS display with 720 x 1280 pixels, an octa-core 1.4GHz MediaTek processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of expandable internal memory. There’s a 13 MP camera on the back, and a 5 MP front-facing camera with a “smart beauty” function for better selfies. The new smartphone also comes with Hotknot, which is an NFC alternative developed by MediaTek.

The Alcatel OneTouch Flash should be available to buy in Thailand starting September 8 for an unknown price (a low one, we assume). Most likely, the handset will be released in other markets shortly after that.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4's front shows up in this case-maker's renders

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4's front shows up in this case-maker's renders
Most of you would know by now -- case makers can't be counted on not to spill the beans before an important announcement. Case in point: accessory trader oaego seems to have basically let slip a bunch of details of the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 4 through a number of renders of a new case for the device.

It should be pointed out that while these look legit, we obviously can't be vouch for their legitimacy. That said, case makers so far have, for the very big part, used renders of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 in their Note 4-related accessories listings. That doesn't seem to be the case here.

For one, the supposed Note 4 rendered here is much alike to what we've seen and expect at this point, and there's another interesting clue: the date and location on the weather widget point to September 4th, Berlin -- that's the locale of Samsung's UNPACKED event, but a day later. Seeing as these are Chinese renders, some of you may think that a China-specific Samsung event is scheduled for a day later, but that is not the case from what we know. Weird.

Going back to the pictures at hand, a closer examination reveals that the Note 4 may once again skip on stereo speakers, as there's a cut-out for a mono speaker on the back. What's even more interesting is that Samsung may have decided to skip on the Galaxy S5's heart rate monitor, as the renders only show a large, rectangular LED flash underneath the rear camera sensor. Whether that's because the company has realized that the monitor is of little benefit to consumers, or because it prefers for the Galaxy S5 to have a unique feature, we do not know.

So, true or fake? We'll know within a little over 24 hours, so stay tuned.

Samsung releases a Note 4 UNPACKED event trailer, check all 'Ready to Note?' teaser videos here
After a few days of releasing Note 4 teasers, extolling the virtues of the S Pen and the large display of its upcoming phablet, Samsung just outed what it calls a "trailer" for the September 3rd UNPACKED event. Have no doubt that we'll keep your seats warm around the stage when the Note 4 makes a cameo at the IFA expo in Berlin next week, and relay all the juicy details as they happen.

The hotly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is primed to feature a breathtaking 5.7" Quad HD Super AMOLED display, and if a leaked wallpaper, claimed to be from the phablet, is any indication, that would indeed be the case. The rest of the stellar specs set are speculated to be a quad-core Snapdragon 805 or octa-core Exynos processors, and a 16 MP camera on the back with optical image stabilization. Let's not forget an eventual new and improved S Pen stylus, which with this detailed screen resolution should be doing wonders in precision drawing and handwriting, as you can see Samsung implying below.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to have the same fingerprint sensor that's found on the S5 and Galaxy Alpha

No comments:

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to have the same fingerprint sensor that's found on the S5 and Galaxy Alpha
While it’s no secret that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 will be officially announced on September 3, there are still plenty of unanswered questions regarding the upcoming device. One of them, however, seems to have found its answer today: according to Sam Mobile, the Note 4 will have a fingerprint sensor that uses Synaptics’ Natural ID solution - thus being similar to the sensors found on the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha. Just like on these two handsets, the sensor of the Galaxy Note 4 should have a part included in the home button, and another one incorporated into the lower area of the display.

In addition to coming with the fingerprint-related software features that you may already know from the Galaxy S5 (Screen Lock, Samsung Account Verification, PayPal Payments, and Private Mode with fingerprint authentication), the Note 4 will reportedly introduce several new features. Among them, Sam Mobile mentions Fingerprint Shortcuts, which seemingly lets you assign applications or commands to any registered fingerprint - so you’ll be able to open apps directly form the lock screen. Another new feature should be Web Sign-in, enabling users to sign-in to various websites just by swiping a finger over the home button.

Fingerprint sensor aside, the Galaxy Note 4 should come with an impressive list of high-end specs. According to previous rumors, the handset will have a 5.7-inch display with 1440 x 2560 pixels, a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3 GB of RAM, and a rear camera with optical image stabilization. Like the Galaxy Alpha, the new Note may sport a metal frame which could give it a more premium look compared to the Galaxy Note 3 (pictured above).

Galaxy Note 4 rumor roundup – everything we know so far

No comments:
Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3---top-bezel-logo
Note: this post was first published on July 23. We have updated it with information that has surfaced since then.
It’s hard to believe, but 2014 is already a little over half of the way through, and what a year it has been. So far we’ve seen some pretty impressive flagship handsets from Samsung, HTC and LG, as well as some other interesting mobile announcements including Android Wear, Android Auto and Android

The year might be in it’s second half, but there’s still plenty to see. Easily one of the biggest Android-related announcements of this year will be the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 4 at IFA in September. As the date approaches, we have already seen the rumors related to the Note 4 intensify and while much is still uncertain, we’re starting to get a better picture of what (we think) the handset will bring to the table.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most prominent rumors related to Samsung’s upcoming flagship to get a better idea of what to expect during the device’s IFA debut.
Design
Going back at least a couple years now, just about every major Samsung device has been surrounded by rumors claiming that the Korean giant will make dramatic changes in terms of its outer design language. The reality, at least so far, is that Samsung has dabbled around with slightly different plastic textures but largely kept the device’s looks the same as ever. With the Note 4 we are once again met with reports that Samsung is doing something different, though given the track record of these types of rumors, it’s hard to approach the claims without a hefty dose of skepticism.
So what design changes does the rumor mill suggest the Note 4 will receive? First, there has been at least a few persistent rumors indicating the company is finally switching to a metal design on at least one variant of the device. Korean media source ET News even goes as far as to claim Samsung is experimenting with stainless steel, aluminum and magnesium for the Note 4′s build.
The image below allegedly represents the Note 4 sporting what looks to be a metallic frame. If legit, the Note 4 will be similar in appearance with the Galaxy Alpha, while maintaining the faux leather texture of the Galaxy Note 3.
galaxy note 4 leak
In addition to offering up more premium materials for the Note 4, the rumor mill also says we could see both flexible and non-flexible options, with the former perhaps serving as an unofficial successor to the Galaxy Round.
According to one report, Samsung is already manufacturing the plastic-based flexible display for a three-sided version of the Note 4, though it’s not clear if said version will be released alongside the regular Note 4 or sometime later. If and when it comes out, this three-sided display model could be called Samsung Galaxy Edge.
samsung youm flexible display
So how credible are these rumors? Honestly, it’s hard to say for sure. Given how many times we’ve heard this song and dance before, it’s best to be cautious about these lofty claims, but in many ways they make sense. With increased competition from metal phones and even LG’s push towards a metal-like plastic design, it seems that the time could (finally) be right for change. This is especially true when you add the fact that Samsung is about to post its worst quarterly earnings report in two years and Apple’s arguably more-premium iPhone is rumored to soon make a jump in screen size that could allow it to compete more effectively with Samsung’s offerings.
With increased competition from metal phones and even LG's push towards a metal-like plastic design, it seems that the time could be right for change
On the other hand, Samsung might not be ready to push the flexible screen revolution another step forward and there are reasons why the firm would still want to keep away from a metal design. Probably the biggest reason at this point for keeping away from metal is that Samsung consumers like the fact their phones have removable backs and batteries in a world where most devices no longer offer this option (though this is starting to change). Creating a functional removable metal back is a very real design challenge, although the Galaxy Alpha is living proof that Samsung can do it.
If we had to take a guess at the Note 4′s design? While we won’t rule out the possibility of a metal casing on at least one version of the device, it’s just as likely that Samsung will end up embracing a metal-like plastic design in a similar fashion to the LG G3. As for the rest of the phone, even if Samsung makes a change to metal, it’s all but guaranteed the traditional button layout will largely remain largely the same on the front.
Outside of the claims of new build materials and flexible displays, the rumor mill also suggests that the handset could see other visually noticeable changes such as new sensors including a fingerprint reader, heart-rate monitor and a UV radiation sensor. The handset is also said to reportedly pack IP67 water/dust resistance.
Display: same size, higher resolution
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 jet black S pen stylus aa 8
When the OG Note debuted, it packed a 5.3-inch display, which at the time seemed gigantic when compared to most other flagship mobile devices. Since then, the Note series display size has continued to creep upward, first to 5.5-inches with the Note 2 and then up to 5.7-inches with the Note 3. If you already feel that the Note’s size is more than big enough, you’ll be happy to know that this year’s Note 4 is reportedly sticking to the same 5.7-inch AMOLED display size.
Of course, just because the resolution is the same doesn’t mean the screen’s quality isn’t improving. Following in LG’s footsteps, the Note 4 is believed to be making the jump to QHD (2560×1440). While some feel that QHD is overkill, it seems only a matter of time before this resolution becomes the standard for flagship devices in late-2014 and into 2015.
Specs and features
Samsung Exynos 5433 AnTuTu ranking
As we’ve seen with many Samsung flagships before it, the Galaxy Note 4 will launch with at least two different processor configurations: one with a Snapdragon 805 CPU and the other with an Exynos 5433 octa-core processor.
In the past the Snapdragon model has generally been used for the North American market and a few others, with the Exynos version used in several international models. It is worth noting that, this time around, both processor packages offer support for LTE.
So what can we expect when it comes to the rest of the hardware? If past leaks and benchmark sightings prove correct, here’s a rundown of what we believe the Note 4 will pack:
  • 1.3GHz Samsung Exynos 5433 octa-core / 2.45GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (APQ8084) (depending on market)
  • ARM Mail-1760 GPU or Adreno 420 (depending on SoC)
  • 5.7-inch QHD display
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 16MP rear cam with Optical Image Stabilization
  • 3.68MP front cam
  • LTE support
  • 32GB storage with microSD (other configurations possible)
  • S pen support
  • Dust/water Resistance
  • New sensors: heart rate monitor, finger print reader, UV sensor
A retailer in Indonesia put up an early listing (image below) of the Note 4, claiming  the device would feature 4GB of RAM. It remains to be seen if that will be the case; it’s possible that different Note 4 versions will have different amounts of RAM.
galaxy note 4 specs retailer leak
As far as software is concerned? We imagine that we’ll see Android 4.4 KitKat at launch with an eventual update to Android L. It remains unseen whether that update will come in 2014 or 2015, but we’d guess the latter. As always, you can expect Touchwiz to be present as well and likely many of the apps and features from the Note 3 and GS5 will end up in the Note 4.
the Galaxy Note 4 will launch with at least two different processor configurations
Starting with the Galaxy S5, Samsung has been marginally scaling back the number of special features and apps added to Touchwiz and, while we imagine that there won’t be any major overhaul to Touchwiz, it seems likely that we could see Sammy continue to push this ‘back to basics’ approach.
The only new software feature that the rumor mill has talked about in any detail is a new S Health app function that is integrated with the Note 4’s UV sensor. The idea is that the Note 4 will be able to tell users when the UV index reaches harmful levels and will give them recommendations (like applying sunscreen). While kind of cool, it’s also pretty gimmicky and, unfortunately, doesn’t happen automatically. Instead, you’ll have to hold the phone at “over 60 degree angle of elevation towards the sun against the back of the sensor”.
Yet another new companion device
Alleged first look at Samsung Gear VR's design
Alleged first look at Samsung Gear VR’s design
At IFA 2013 we saw the launch of the Galaxy Gear alongside the Note 3. While the company’s first watch didn’t do all that well, this didn’t stop the Korean giant from launching a successor alongside the Galaxy S5 earlier this year. So will the Note 4 also see some sort of companion? While it seems a bit too early for a Gear 3, we’ve heard several rumors suggesting that Samsung is preparing at least one companion device for release at IFA.
So what can we expect? It depends on which report you look at. Initially, we heard that the rumored Gear Glass would be shown off, and then there was talk about the Gear VR. Finally, the most recent report claims we’ll see a Gear 3 watch, as well as a SIM-equipped Gear Solo. It’s hard to say which of these reports, if any, are correct. Perhaps they all got it right and Samsung is launching three new wearable devices alongside the Note 4? Anything is possible.
Release date
We’re positive that the Galaxy Note 4 will be introduced to the world on September 3 at Samsung’s traditional Unpacked event. There are rumors claiming Samsung is accelerating the release date of the Note 4 this year, and we may even see the device out by mid September.
Wrap up
It’s almost inevitable that some of the rumored changes and features we’ve reported on won’t actually make it into the final Note 4 hardware, though most of what is mentioned above has been featured in more than one unofficial report lending a little more credence to the claimed specs, features and even design changes.
As IFA draws closer we expect even more juicy rumors to pour in, so we’ll be sure to update this post with the most probable rumors and leaks as they hit. Based on what we know so far, are you excited for the Note 4 — what features and improvements are you most interested in seeing?
