You’ve already heard all about it: Apple is said to unveil not one, but two new smartphones this year, and both of them are expected to be larger than the current 4-inch iPhone 5s. One of them, however, is to be even bigger than most smartphones today and will easily qualify as a ‘phablet’.

We’re talking about the rumored 5.5-inch iPhone, a device that we’ve earlier heard could feature a special one-handed operation mode because of its large size. The newest rumor, however, gives this 5.5” iPhone some iPad-like capabilities - screen rotation.

The option will allegedly only be present on the larger 5.5” iPhone, but not on the 4.7-inch model. It will allow users to get more usage out of that big screen, and will feature specially optimized apps (in a way similar to how the iPad has tailor-made applications) with a two-panel view. This would allow fitting more functionality and information on the display.

Right below are claimed simulated images of what such an interface could look like. Android users will of course be quick to point out that this is a standard option in some gadgets running on Google’s operating system, but let’s wait and see whether Apple really implements this and how it does that.

Amazon comes to its senses: Fire Phone is now (almost) free on contract

Since the very beginning, Amazon was criticized for asking $199.99 (on contract) for its Fire Phone. The handset simply isn’t on par with other devices at this price point, despite the fact that it comes with a few unique features, like the Dynamic Perspective UI, and Amazon’s Firefly service.

Last month, we told you that the Fire Phone had failed pretty badly. It looks like Amazon is now silently acknowledging this - by announcing a massive price cut. Starting today, September 8, the Fire Phone can be bought for just $0.99 on contract (this still includes a free 1-year subscription to Amazon Prime). The major price cut comes less than two months after the Fire Phone hit shelves across the US (being available only via AT&T and Amazon). Déjà vu?

At $0.99 on contract, the Fire Phone may actually be a good choice, though we must note that the handset is still an AT&T-exclusive. To find out more about the device, check out our Amazon Fire Phone review.

The failure of Amazon’s Fire Phone goes to show that, no matter how big a company you are, you can’t launch new products without thoroughly considering every other similarly-priced product that the competition is already offering.

Summary

  • Apple has set the standard for smartphones with its 64 bit processors and true 64 bit mobile operating system.
  • This dashed any hope Microsoft had of positioning Lumia as a premium brand and forced it to compete with Android as a commodity smartphone.
  • The result has been declining shipments and market share for Windows Phone.
  • The purchase of Nokia was the wrong move that leaves Microsoft with almost no chance to be competitive or establish a viable smartphone ecosystem.
Yesterday Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) unveiled some new Lumia devices, most prominently the Lumia 830, dubbed the "affordable flagship." Affordable it may be, but flagship is a bit of a stretch. For more than a year, the flagship category has been put out of reach by Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) superior 64 bit mobile processors, dashing Microsoft's hopes of having a premium smart phone brand. This left Microsoft with no choice but to slug it out with Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android in the commodity smartphone market, a battle that has left Windows Phone bruised, bleeding and all but dead.

SmartPhone OS Market Share

IDC's recently published data on smartphone market share underscores the severity of the fall of Windows Phone. For more than a year, Nokia, Microsoft's principal Windows Phone partner, has been absent from IDC's list of top five smartphone manufacturers, so it was difficult to gauge how far Windows Phone had fallen, but IDC's August 14 announcement broke down the market by operating system:

Windows Phone didn't merely suffer a market share decline in Q2, but a real decline in unit shipments year over year. This data has been confirmed by Microsoft's quarterly earnings report, which showed that only 5.8 million Nokia Lumia phones were shipped in the quarter.
I often hear Microsoft supporters affirm that Windows phone has achieved 3rd place among smartphone operating systems, which had been Microsoft's stated objective. But MS got third place by default as BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) sales collapsed, as the numbers above demonstrate.
Throughout 2013, Windows Phone gained market share, even passing Blackberry to take third place by Q2, according to Gartner data. The new standard set by iPhone 5s at the high end of the market and increasingly "premium" Android phones at the lower end of the market halted Microsoft's momentum by Q2 of this year.

Paradigm Failure

The failure of Windows Phone to achieve sustainable growth and profitability is fundamentally a failure of the commodity PC paradigm that Microsoft attempted to apply to the mobile device category. When Windows Phone 7 was introduced at the end of 2012, it's clear that Microsoft still assumed that the PC paradigm would work for smartphones: Microsoft would be the creator/owner of the operating system that it would license for a fee to an ecosystem of hardware vendors. These vendors would flood the market with Windows Phones at various price points, and like the commodity PC juggernaut, crush everything in their path.
From the start, this model started to fall apart. As the price for its participation in Windows Phone, Nokia had received a subsidy from Microsoft that canceled the license fees that Microsoft would have received for its phone OS. This was necessitated by the need to compete with Google's free Android operating system, which conferred a cost advantage to Android device makers. If Microsoft hadn't been willing to subsidize the OS for Nokia, Nokia would have gone with Android.
So the dynamics of the market had already been skewed away from the commodity licensing model that Microsoft had hoped to impose. But there was another fundamental dynamic that was changing. In the PC licensing model, hardware technology leadership rested with the chip maker, specifically Intel. The integrated mobile device makers such as Apple and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) had seized this leadership in a paradigm shift away from the commodity chip makers, a shift that is still underway.
When Apple introduced its first custom designed SOC's (for the first iPad), numerous industry pundits predicted that this was merely an aberration, and that the commodity chip makers would eventually reassert their dominance. This just hasn't happened. Mobile device makers such as Samsung and Apple simply have become too powerful and too well funded.
Apple's introduction of its custom designed 64 bit A7, and its subsequent effect on iPhone sales and the smartphone market, demonstrate the strength of the new paradigm: integrated device makers designing their own ICs, which are then fabricated by third party foundries. Almost a year later, the fact that the only other 64 bit mobile processor in production is by Samsung shows the power of the new paradigm.
Commodity chip makers such as Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) are still scrambling to catch up. Qualcomm is expected to roll out its first 64 bit processors in 2015, and Intel? Here's what I believe happened to Intel. At the beginning of the year, Intel was expected to roll out the phone version of Bay Trail, Merrifield, which would have been Intel's 64 bit smart phone processor based on its 22 nm process. Merrifield has been a no show, and Intel execs didn't even want to talk about it at the Q2 conference call. I believe Intel backed off of the Merrifield roll out because they realized that it would also require contra-revenue subsidies to achieve any significant market penetration. This might have added another $1 or $2 billion in loss to their mobile devices division, and Intel management decided they simply couldn't afford it.
The lack of any effective response to the A7 from the commodity chip makers meant that Microsoft couldn't really play in the premium smart phone space. Instead, Lumia phones feature Qualcomm SOCs, which are nice, but they're last year's tech.

Forms of Integration

Microsoft's attempt to become an integrated device maker through its purchase of Nokia demonstrates a realization that the PC commodity paradigm had failed it. Unfortunately for Microsoft, it embraced the wrong form of integration. Apple has already demonstrated what works: designing your own custom SOCs. This provides the most leverage to device makers in order to create discriminators for their products. Being able to assemble your own devices is not actually an important discriminator and probably confers no competitive advantage. It's best left to contract manufacturers such as Hon Hai (Foxconn).
If Microsoft embraced the wrong form of integration with the purchase of Nokia, what chance does Microsoft have of making Windows Phone competitive? Almost none at this point. Apple will continue to set the standard at the high end of the smartphone market, while Google's forthcoming 64 bit Android L will dominate everywhere else.

In Brazil, the Nokia Lumia 920 is red hot. In fact, it's smoking. Actually, we are talking about just one Lumia 920 that caught on fire after being left to recharge overnight. The owner of the device, a gentleman named Fabricio, says that not only does the phone still work, it actually continues to recharge. But Fabricio is a bit worried. He is concerned that the device might catch on fire again, or explode.

Now, you might be asking about the warranty. Why doesn't Fabricio simply return the phone? Well, it turns out that the warranty on his handset expired two months ago. And to make matters worse, Nokia refuses to repair the device for free; this upset Fabricio so much, that he vows that his next phone will be an Android model. He wonders how Nokia could give a free handset to someone that had a Samsung built Android model catch on fire, but fail to take care of someone who is a Nokia customer. 

You can't blame Nokia for not repairing the phone. Sometimes, it is the phone owner's fault. You might remember a couple of years ago, a Samsung Galaxy S III was said to have exploded while in an unplugged car dock. Both Carphone Warehouse, where the phone was purchased, and Samsung, refused to replace the charred model. And when the truth was finally revealed, it turned out that the retailer and manufacturer had done the right thing. Apparently, a friend of the phone's owner had dropped it in water. Panicked, he tossed it into the microwave in a misguided attempt to dry it off.

As far as Fabricio is concerned, unless he can convince Nokia that he honestly deserves a free replacement, he will continue to use his burnt Nokia Lumia 920 until it is time for him to make the switch to Android.

Android powered smart helmet produced by DAQRI
The latest in Android powered wearables is a Smart Helmet. Produced by DAQRI, the helmet sports a visor, cameras and sensors, and is designed to be used by the lunch-pail set. This sets it apart from Google Glass. DAQRI president Andy Lowery has promised to "spare no expense," which means that the helmet could have a price in the thousands of dollars.

The Smart Helmet is powered by two Snapdragon processors, and can pair with a smartphone or a smartwatch. It can be used to visually superimpose instructions on the visor, as an engineer is working to repair a rather complex piece of machinery. It can be used during inspections of expensive equipment before a product is shipped. Data is saved on flash cartridges.

The DAQRI helmet obviously doesn't have the same target audience as Google Glass has. This isn't a product that you casually put on before heading out to a bar or restaurant. And even though Google Glass might be able to handle some of the tasks that the helmet will be asked to perform, Daqri users won't be snapping pictures to post on Instagram. In fact, the cameras will be used to document what workers are doing, allowing another set of eyes to take a good look at the production and inspection of machinery.

Online research firm Survata completed a survey of 889 people, and discovered that 6% of BlackBerry users are "very likely" to switch to the Apple iPhone 6. For Android users, 5% believe that they will end up purchasing the iPhone 6. Only 3% of Windows Phone users said that they were likely to switch. The survey took place between September 2nd and September 4th.

Not surprisingly, 36% of Apple iPhone 5 owners expect to buy the iPhone 6. Many who purchased the iPhone 5, will soon have their two-year contract expire. That will leave them with an upgrade to use toward purchasing the new handset at a subsidized price. Those with the newer Apple iPhone 5s (18%) and Apple iPhone 5c (15%) are also desirous of the larger-screened version of their phone.

In noting that only 5% of Android users surveyed said that they were likely to switch to the iPhone 6, Survata said that the features expected to appear on the next iteration of Apple's smartphone, a 4.7 inch screen with a 417ppi pixel density, and NFC connectivity, have long been available on Android handsets.

Considering that the Apple iPhone 6 has yet to be introduced, those responding to the survey had to base their answers on speculation and rumors. These numbers could be different after Tuesday, once the Apple iPhone 6 is unveiled.

Samsung Gear VR infographic shows you what the new gadget is all about
The topic of virtual reality is not one that is new, but it wasn't until recently that actual viable products that did VR properly were commercialized. At the forefront in that field is Oculus -- the company that brought us the Rift. As it turns out, Samsung's ever watchful eye was also pointed in the same general direction, and it didn't take long for the company to finally debut its own take on the new concept with the Gear VR.

The important thing to remember about the Samsung Gear VR is that Oculus played a major role in its creation, and this is made obvious by the "Powered by Oculus" marking on the side of the Samsung gadget. Where the two differ, however, is that the Gear VR will require an Android device to work (a Note 4), and that's important because the electronics giant will have to spur enough developer interest to jump-start the category on Android. Whether Samsung is to be met with success in that regard remains to be seen, so, for the time being, the company is mostly focused on explaining what the Gear VR actually is, and what it's made of. Samsung Gear VR hands-on: we dive into virtual reality

Once upon a time there was the Nintendo Virtual Boy – an ambitious video game console that came with the promise to immerse the player in a virtual reality experience. Sadly, it flopped so bad that it is regarded as one of the worst failures in the history of consumer technology. Now, almost 20 years later, Samsung is launching a very similar contraption – a contraption that does virtual reality the right way, or so it seems. It is called the Samsung Gear VR, and here at IFA 2014 we had the chance to give it a try.

The design

At a glance, the Samsung Gear VR appears to be nothing but a set of plastic-made goggles that you wear on your head. There's more to it than meets the eye, however. Samsung's virtual reality handset is used together with a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 – when docked, the phone acts as the screen and brains of the Gear VR. So what does the latter do? Well, the Gear VR has a set of lenses – one for each of the user's eye – which allow one to focus their sight on the image. It also takes care of detecting the motion of the user's head and hosts navigation controls on the side. 

As far as comfort goes, the Samsung Gear VR is a light gadget, but probably not as light as we wish it was. Games and media will do a great job at drawing your attention, but at the same time, chances are you won't be able to ignore the fact that you have the gizmo strapped to your face. Speaking of the straps, they can be adjusted depending on the wearer's preferences. Soft, foamy material acts as a border between your face and the unit. Focusing, which we found to be a bit fiddly, is adjusted with a single wheel situated on the top of the Gear VR. It would have been nicer, however, if the two lenses could be adjusted independently for each eye.

The experience


"Wow!" – this is the reaction that often follows right after one puts the Samsung Gear VR on. Without a doubt, having the ability to look around by tilting your head, as if you're really in the environment being projected, is an exciting experience. Also, we like how the video being projected fill your eyes' field of view really well, without leaving giant black borders around the sides. As for the demos, we had the chance to play a dungeon crawler video game, which we controlled with Samsung's own smartphone gamepad, but Samsung also had booths where videos were being projected on Gear VR units. 

Overall, our initial experience was a fun one, but we can't say that we're sold on Samsung's interpretation of virtual reality headsets at this time. There are still some factors that seem to be holding the device back, such as its size, its weight, and the fact that it only works with the Galaxy Note 4, at least for now. Plus, it is hard to say what the quality of the Gear VR content is going to be like. Sub-par videos and games can quickly lead to the demise of what's already shaping up as a niche gadget. Nevertheless, we hope to give it a more in-depth look in the near future.

The evolution of Sony's Xperia series from the Windows-based X1 to the brand new Z3
Believe it or not, the Xperia range of smartphones is one of the oldest that’s still around today. Those who’ve been watching the industry for more than just a few years certainly know that the very first Xperia was announced in early 2008, and hit shelves around the world starting October that year. Unlike today’s Xperias, the first model ran Windows Mobile, and was launched at a time when Sony was still in a joint venture with Sweden’s Ericsson - that’s why the handset’s called Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.

Since the release of the X1, more than 50 Xperia models have been introduced, culminating with the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact that were announced earlier this week at IFA 2014. 

We’re thinking that the introduction of the Z3 models is a good occasion for us to take a look at all the important Xperias that have been released over the years. It’s interesting to see how the Xperia design evolved, while at the same time retaining something that makes us identify them as Sony products - from the 17mm-thick Xperia X1 to the 7mm-thin Xperia Z3. So, let's sit back and take a look at how things progressed in the 6 years since the first Xperia was unveiled.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

As we already mentioned, the Xperia X1 was a Windows-based smartphone. It ran Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, featuring a sliding QWERTY keyboard, and a 3.0-inch display. This display had a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, offering one of the highest ppi densities among 2008’s smartphones. By comparison, that year’s iPhone (the iPhone 3G) featured a 3.5-inch display with a measly 320 x 480 pixel resolution and a 165 ppi density, while the HTC Touch Pro - one of Xperia X1’s direct competitors - offered a 2.8-inch screen with 480 x 640 pixels (286ppi).

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2

Although it was announced in September 2009, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 went on sale in January 2010. It was the second - and last - Windows-based Xperia. The X2 came with an arguably more elegant design, though it retained the overall style of the X1. It offered an improved QWERTY keyboard, and a larger, 3.2-inch display (its resolution remained unchanged: 480 x 800 pixels).

The reason why Sony (Ericsson) abandoned Windows Mobile? Android, of course. Two months after announcing the X2, the company revealed the Xperia X10, its very first Android smartphone. The X10 hit the market in March 2010 as one of that year’s Android flagships. Although it was praised for its design and specs (including the large, 4-inch display with 480 x 854 pixels), the Xperia X10 was criticized for shipping with Android 1.6 Donut instead of Android Éclair (which had been available since October 2009).
